![]() Hi. Have you heard Grimes? No? Well open your ears and allow me to share the dreamy goodness. After a solid listen to ‘Vanessa’, there’s no way you won’t be obsessed and after thanking me, hating me a little because mark my words, this will take over your iPod. Montreal-based Claire Boucher (the founding and only consistent member of Grimes) layers haunting, delicate vocals reminiscent of Lykke Li (who, it should come as no surprise, she has opened for) over inventive beats that would make the likes of Hot Chip jealous. Boucher collaborates with other music makers, including DJs and vocalists, on different albums to beget that avant-pop sound, the true sign of someone who creates not just songs but pieces of melodic art. The ‘sound’ version of an abstract contemporary piece, if you will. Grimes is intriguing, poppy and a little eerie – the type of music you might listen to if you were going to an extremely hip seance. Or riding a black horse through a fairytale forest and onto, oh you know, another planet (best sci-fi flick ever?). Or maybe just while enjoying a few cocktails and a mini dance party with friends before going out on the town. Whatever works. Grimes is pure (black) magick and needs to be on your radar stat. Do you love it? What other music do you listen to that’s part witchy and all amazing?
Hope you love!
