It ends up being Santa Monica. Let’s walk the Pier? Let’s. You’ve lived here for years, upon years, upon years, yet the Pier has been here so much longer. It has seen kisses between lovers, tears over spilled ice cream. The crashing of the waves is always eminent. As are the screams from the roller coaster. The screams Hitchcock-esque, they are thrilling. Yes, we should have the funny clown make us a balloon. Yes, we should step into the photo booth and give it a go. Yes, we should try our hand at the ring toss, despite knowing the odds are NOT in our favor. All the while, I can’t stop thinking about Sofia Loren in Houseboat. The part where the game attendant turns around, she leans over, puts the ring down the pole so that the boy can win the harmonica, screaming, “Oh, your father the Chief of Police will be so happy!”
This is all before dinner. The night has already started with so much laughter. Nights like these make me fortunate to have such wonderful people in my life. Yes, you can look at it as “just the pier” or you can think “I’ve been there before.” But if you’re with the right person, you probably aren’t thinking those things. Sometimes it’s nice to surprise ourselves. Where can you go to do this? Who of your near and dear needs a night like this tonight!? Don’t we all??
