SYNOPSIS: “Love and a severed foot at the end of the world.”
In case you haven’t noticed, we’re having a little ongoing love affair with Julia Pott here at YM&C. I was first introduced to Pott’s work when her animated short, Belly, made the festival rounds early this summer. It was one of the most beautiful short films I’ve ever seen. I fell even more in love with Pott when we got to know her through Dianna’s Q&A a few weeks later.
Pott’s new film “The Event” became available online yesterday after premiering on UK’s Channel 4 (October 2nd) as part of the Random Acts series. The film is based on a Tom Chivers poem by the same name. Pott lays out only the bare bones of the story through conventional narrative, and the majority of the film unfolds completely viscerally. Compared to Pott’s previous work, the subject matter is slightly darker, the visuals slightly heightened (Pott incorporates live action footage into her illustrations), and the result is slightly more spectacular. Thank you, Julia, for doing it again.
