Destiny [animated short] Author:   ·  October 8th, 2012

Destiny is a computer generated animated short created by a group of French students from art school, Bellecour. The film deals with the underlying notion that every second counts. The visuals are lovely and warm – reminiscent of a Pixar animated film; the narrative is effortless with the story unfolding at the perfect pace (like a roller coaster slowly making it’s way to the top before the drop).

Directed by students Fabien Weibel, Sandrine Wurster, Debatisse Victor, and Manuel Alligné, Destiny is an entertaining time-loop. Watch as Joe-Shmo re-lives each morning with one more chance to change his “destiny”.

This was my favourite post from the ‘Watch’ section! This was brilliant! I love animation and I really enjoyed watching this. I agree, very Pixar like. When it first begun I noticed the clock was out of time with the others just a second before he fixed it! Made me laugh a little. I like that it has a little bit of humour but such a great moral message within it.

This is the best! It’s a fantastic testament to the idea that our destiny is in our own hands if we just find the way to shape it. Visually, it is perfection! The shattering of glass and the clocks made my hand twitch because I wanted to cover my face; it was that realistic. I would recommend this to anyone who comes to this site as something to watch.

  • Justlike_awoman

    This is so well done!

This is my favorite post in “WATCH”. I enjoy animated shorts. At first, I wasn’t really sure what I was expecting out of this. As the video went on I was a bit confused. Then realized what happened. He just got to keep waking up, in order to change his destiny. I’d like to see Pixar do something like this, but I think it would freak out Pixar’s younger audience. I showed this to my cousin and we basically watch it everytime we are together. It’s too interesting to not watch.

Genuinely, this made my heart raced. I guess we can say that destiny is meant to be, it’s going to come along. But sometimes we don’t realize that it is by what we are doing that leads us to destiny. It’s in us. When we wake up, we’re going towards it. And it is with ourselves that we change out direction that will genuinely lead to it in the end. It’s all in us. Short animations with no narration is my favourite kind. You can feel the emotion and tense through music and expressions. Very brilliantly done.

Love the concept and execution of this animated short! All of the attention to detail, such as in the kitchen, is amazing!

  • http://twitter.com/The_Froggy Manon C.

Great video =D I really love the visual, it is really well done and they are still students ! It makes me also proud to know that they are from an art school of my city =D

  • Ashley Cohen

This was truly amazing to watch! When i first clicked it, I really thought it was gong to be some sort of Disney/Pixar film short but in turn it just had the makings of one. I loved the concept of it and I wouldn’t be surprised if this was turned into some sort of Pixar movie because the message is amazing.

  • Rachel King

    Loved this!

Even though I enjoyed a lot of the things posted in the film section of this site, this one takes the cake. I love the fluidity of the animation, the way the art was so crisp, and don’t even get me started on the genius of the story telling. When I first saw the guy get hit by the bus, I literally jumped out of my seat. What was great about this film is that I felt the emotions that I’m sure the filmmakers intended me to feel, and that, to me, is why this film is very successful in my mind.

  • TyghTy

Take it from me, i don’t want a Date with Destiny (so much better then a day, i want a prophecy to Stay or never stop.

  • TyghTy

i think “Destiny” the animated short = is about really being on the ball.

  • http://twitter.com/emsbakerchick85 Gay Glitter Queen

This was really good and really insightful. Destiny really is what you make it

  • Gigi Choy

Even though this was short, there was so much that could be taken away from the film. I’ve always believed that you can never fight destiny, but this film has proven otherwise.

  • Naomi_Ohayon

This is my favorite post. It does show that every minute counts, and that you shouldn’t wait for the right time, or place or person, you should just go for it! Your time is your own, but you should never waste it, live each second to the fullest, and never have regrets. Destiny is what you make of it not just what ends up happening, you can always change your destiny!

I love the animation, I have always been a fan of animated films, since I was a kid, and it’s refreshing to know that animated films aren’t only for kids, that adults can get pleasure and joy from an animated film just as much as kids do.

  • Dylan Gray

I love this not only for the warm fuzzies I get from animated films especially those with hints of pixar or even those which are a little reminiscent of Wallace and Gromit but also for the more sinister side. Im presonally scared of clocks and the idea that every second counts, being as ninety percent of my life it taken in waiting for things to happen this idea is quite tragic. Therefore that is what attracted me to this post

  • http://twitter.com/atothedriennne Adrienne Salinas

Not only is this post my favorite of the “Watch” section, it’s my favorite post overall. This video shows us that we shouldn’t have the same routine everyday because life is too precious and every second counts. There’s so much more I could say about this video but I feel like it speaks for itself. It’s insightful yet it feels as if I’m watching a pixar short film.

  • Lauren O’Farrell

This has to be my favourite post in the WATCH category because it gives
such a powerful meaning about life and how sometimes you just need to stop and
smell the roses rather than worry what is going to happen next. This clip was a
real wake up call for me as I do live my life with such a precise routine that
sometimes I may forget the little things in the world, and what’s the point
when you can’t stop and take a min just to look up at the magic blue sky and
    take in what’s around you.

I think Melody summed it up perfectly by saying “ every second counts”
as life can be short so live it to the max. Thank you for the lovely short
    film.

  • Maridel Manalo

This is definitely my favorite post from the WATCH category because Destiny is… Ahhh, I have no words! It was… amazing! Its lesson about life and being to “precise” in everything you do is such an eye opener to a lot of people and I wish that they could watch this awesome short film and realize that what they’re doing isn’t really that great. We should not try and make ourselves perfect because we should be able to enjoy the little things in life. Every second counts. Let’s make every moment precious. Be happy because you’re alive. Do your best to always have a smile on your face. This short film has taught me a lot of things and I really do hope that others see it that way too. :)

    This got me thinking…..

  • Bernadette

A favourite of mine in the WATCH category but most probably a favourite post from the entire YM&C site. It is incredibly refreshing and thought-provoking! It was just one of those videos that keep your interest and attention the whole way through. I absolutely love the vibrant colours in the interface, it’s juxtaposed nicely to the situation the protagonist faces which is more of an anxiety inducer than it is cheery. The message of the story in general is simple but the way it’s portrayed by the composition and direction of the film just illustrates it in a way that really sticks to you.

Destiny is my favorite post from WATCH, it always was!
It’s makes you realize how important every second in life is.
Every second could be your latest second, that’s not a fine idea I know but it’s the truth.
There are so many people who wanna be perfect or are working too hard their whole live.
I wish there was a way to show everyone that they have to enjoy every second of their lives!
Because every day, every hour and every second is what makes your life right?
For some of us they don’t really get it ‘every second is important’ they would think ‘I just forget the bad seconds in life’ but to animate this, to create a video where you really SEE that every second counts.
Everyone from every country will understand this because they don’t talk so it doesn’t matter if you can’t english or spanish.
This clip made me realize that I have to enjoy my life MORE than I already did.
And I’m thanksfull for that, thank you french students for making this and thank you Melody for sharing this ;)

Wow I love thissssssssssssssss so much! It reminded me of Groundhog Day :D which I actually watched so many times when I was younger. Congratulations on your talent Fabien Weibel, Sandrine Wurster, Debatisse Victor and Manuel Alligné, you did amazing work!

That video truly drove me to a reflection. So damn good!

  • Cissa Martins

This is my favorite by far. I love animation, I once had the opportunity to be a judge of a film festival here in Brazil, called ‘international festival of films for children’ and the vast majority was composed of animations, which is really cool … and also because in school I studied animation and I know how difficult it is to make every detail … and this video is just perfect. Also made much sense to me because English (French in this case lol) is not my first language, and for me it is much easier to understand reading than listening, and in this video I could understand the story from beginning to end, since he was not “talking”(of course he was talking, I mean, not with the mouth, but like.. the way he looks desperate throughout the video, and the voice was not necessary to spend so which to me is a plus, because anyone can understand, regardless of the language spoken) and I was I thinking, what will happen? what will happen? then the music soundtrack is getting heavier and more strong and I was getting more desperate too …. and then when the video ended I thought, amazing video, good job! ;P

  • http://twitter.com/soledat_ Sol.

I loved this. After tha day I had watching this is like breathing again, and you could say that it is a wake up call. Yeah, every second counts, but we have to live it, not worry about what you lost, and that’s what I’ve been doing all day long. Ugh! Even though the week is almost over I want to enjoy what’s left of it. You have no idea how much I thank you for this video!

  • Anneliese Villanueva

This is my favorite post in the Watch section. That was very intense, and there wasn’t even any speaking. It is interesting how the activities the man is doing are simple everyday tasks. He isn’t doing anything out of the ordinary and then in one instant his life is seemingly ended. I love how when he kept waking up to the same day even the reincarnations are doing the same thing. We go around doing the same tasks every day. I think this should remind us to explore the world around us and not get stuck in monotony. I liked how there were so many clocks around. It goes to show that while time is forever, our time on Earth is limited and we don’t know when it will end. The last bit with the umbrella was funny. I loved this little short. So creative and had a great message.

  • Joanna

I just love when something your watching pertains to your own life. I’m just starting to realize what an impact a few moments can have on your life and this little short film reiterated that for me. As I live day by day, I sometimes feel regret for something I said or did not say, so I am currently trying to make every second count by saying what I feel because I might not get that opportunity again. I also really loved how this film looked almost playful and childish because it was animated, but the message it conveyed was nothing of the sort. I really hope that I can take this as an example to reinforce living to the fullest.

  • Faith Cantos

This is so amazing! My fave post for Watch. A simple animated film yet it gives multiple meanings about life. We build our destiny with our choices and decisions. Sometimes we’re very focused on one thing that we cannot appreciate other things surrounding us. The idea of the French makers is brilliant! A simple act can change your destiny. Sometimes you will never know the true value of a moment and the value of your life until something will happen that you don’t like. Flawless work guys!

  • Joanna

I really love this video for two reasons. First, this video appears childish and playful because of it being animated, which completely fascinates me. Second is how much it pertains to my life. I cannot remember how many times I have had regret after a certain situation, weather it be what I said or did not say. This five minute film reinforced what I try to do everyday, live every moment completely. Say what you to the fullest because you may never get another opportunity to do so. Just a very powerful message behind this short film that has impacted me.

  • Cole VanSon

“Destiny” is my favorite post in the Watch category. My jaw literally dropped when the guy got hit by the bus. I was not expecting that in a happy-go-lucky animated film. However, this short film is incredible with a wonderful message. Another beautiful way to remind us to make every moment count. With only five minutes to get to know the character, he really made me laugh. I like how there was a little humor incorporated into this film. Much credit deserved for the creators of this film!

  • Charlotte

There was such deep meaning in this video, I was surprised! We can all so easily get stuck in a life of monotony and lose track of important things like relationships or even taking time for ourselves. Life becomes all about work, school, and all the other responsibilities involved in being an adult. We get tunnel vision on the end result, a degree, a promotion, and can so easily miss something as important and obvious as a bus hurtling towards us. We need to take time to breathe, break the mould and do something different. Life is short and love is sweet. Treasure it, live it.

  • Wietske

This is my favourite Watch post. It is so simple, but yet shocking. It’s shocking how one second can really matter. I like how in the end he gets electrocuted, because it’s about destiny and that you can’t get away from the death. The animation makes me think about Up and I like that kind of animation a lot. It looks great!
It was quite interesting to see how the man just kept waking up again and eventually found a way to save himself.

Oh. My. Word. One of my favourite posts on YM&C and quite possibly one of my favourite things ever. This is one of the cutest, yet at the same time one of the most amazing videos I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. Who knew an animated character could make you look at your life in such a way? It’s true, though. Our time here is short and we have no idea when it could all be taken away. I have grown to try to appreciate the more important things in life rather than all the silly things, but of course that’s a learning journey. I love this video. It just brought a little more sunshine to my day.

  • GoldringI

I think this has to be my favourite Watch. And not just because it was about watches. I’ve always had a personal interest in 3D graphics, and I’m aware mind-numbingly difficult it is to get these things looking just so; combine with the amusing, slightly bittersweet, story, and we have a winner. The stop-motion animation The Maker would be a close second, however (and in the interests of full disclosure, I must point out that I didn’t watch the Julia Potts films – the visual style simply didn’t appeal, sorry – and I appear to be unable to watch the long film from Milo Greene, it comes up with a localisation block).

  • lauramaek61

This post provides an intrinsic commentary on the routine actions performed by so many, and highlights the enhanced likelihood for one to fail to see the beauty in life and its surprises. As the man fails to alter his fate by adjusting a constant variable, he attempts to do more of the same, and finds that only changing his perception of a situation will modify the outcome. Additionally, the post inspires a return to a simpler life, much like that which a child lives, where tasks are completed when they are completed, and the world does not revolve around a clock. Whether or not the creators intended to entirely change the viewer’s perspective of life, or rather simply to ask viewers to occasionally take a moment to enjoy themselves, the short easily accomplishes the former:a difficult feat at that.

  • http://twitter.com/ampilovesyou Amparo Paredes

So cool! I’ll have to show this to my mom! She believes a lot in destiny.

  • http://twitter.com/AngelFairyGirl Angeles

This is my favorite Watch post. is good to see and support new talents especially young people who dream of achieving their goals and what they want in life. This short makes me think about the twist of fate, or Serendipity meaning a “happy accident” or “pleasant surprise”; specifically, the accident of finding something good or useful while not specifically searching for it. or maybe think of karma in the belief that if we do good things, good things get, if we do bad things, bad things will get. I loved this and how expressed this idea.
