Shay Kun is an Israeli-born, New York-based painter, whose resume is quite impressive. Born in 1974, he started to paint when he learned how to walk (both his parents are artists), and had his first solo exhibition in Israel at the age of 18! His paintings are captivating - for some reason, you can’t turn your eyes away from them. Is it his use of color? His subjects? One thing is for sure: the first time I saw his canvas, the only word that came to mind was ‘incredible’.
His recent series Lift Off depicts a variety of colorful hot air balloons inspired by old and damaged little toys from the Holocaust. Kun nurtures and breathes new life into them through his paintings. His Tear Drop Series is fascinating as well: it’s really hard to believe that these pieces aren’t created from a photo or using any digital tools. Have you ever seen anything like this?
