Shintaro Ohata is a Japanese artist, born in Hiroshima and represented by the Yukari Art Gallery in Tokyo. His work is some of the most amazing and unique I have ever seen. When looking at his pieces up close, they look like simple (yet enchanting) oil paintings. But the magic really happens when you realize that they are actually a subtle mix of sculptures and painted canvas. In Ohata’s pieces, the characters are actually made from polystryrene and placed in front of the painted background. Incredible, right?!
Ohata plays with 2D and 3D to create vivid works of art; the way he uses color and light accentuates the beauty and the mystery of each piece even further. The scenes he depicts are simple, manga inspired romantic scenes. Ohata describes them as “little things in everyday life”.
