Sander in her workspace -
Sander illustrating!
Hyshil Sander is an incredibly talented Dutch illustrator and graphic designer currently residing in Amsterdam with her husband and daughter. Her illustrations are meticulously hand crafted, but still retain a wonderful youthful quality. Her client list is highly diverse (and impressive) - her work has been featured on Tumblr, Vogue, Stella Magazine, AMMO (the list goes on…) Her editorial design is absolutely amazing!! (See above).
Sander describes her process as “Illustrating the inner workings of my glitter mind”. She explains, “My creatures navigate through starry clouds and never ending ribbons to act out my relentless enthusiasm for cute stuff. All drawings are entirely drawn by hand, using colored pencils. I aim to digitally alter as little as possible.”
I asked Sander if she’d like to answer a few questions for YM&C readers, and she was kind enough to give us a inside look at her world. Check out our Q&A below!
Jessica: Show us your work space:

J: Who/What are you inspired by at the moment?
Hyshil: I’m reading Jane Eyre and I’m loving it. Charlotte Brönte was about my age when she was writing it and I’m just so in awe, it’s very inspiring as a story, the strong character and the fact that she was so intelligent writing this. In 1847. Also, I loooove The Gentlewoman. And, the creative director (Jop van Bennekom) is a Dutchman!
J: Artist or musician you’re loving at the moment?
Hyshil: I’m obsessed with the Girls soundtrack. I measure distances traveled by the number of times the album has looped.
J: What’s on your night stand right now?
Hyshil: Jane Eyre, hairbands, my glasses, a bobby pin and a piece of concrete my daughter gave me.
J: Favorite art piece you own (take a picture of it)
Hyshil: This beautiful print by Charley Harper. He was so modern and graphic, but wasn’t afraid of organic shapes either.
J: Last movie you saw? What did you think?
Hyshil: ”Damsels in Distress” with Greta Gerwig. I love anything with Greta Gerwig.
J: Make a Self Portrait…. (any materials acceptable)

J: Quote to live by?
Hyshil: “Only boring people get bored” – Ruth Burke
J: If you could interview one person, who would it be and what would you ask them?
Hyshil: Zadie Smith. Honestly, I would just want to be around her for a while and see what she’d say, what kind of person she’d be.
