Friedrich Kunath is a German artist who now lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. I first discovered Friedrich Kunath’s paintings thanks to friends who frequent the Blum & Poe Gallery in Los Angeles, CA.
Friedrich Kunaths’ palette of bright colours, overlaid with black inky doodles and drawings drew me in immediately. “Sunshine and Noir,” he’s been known to call it. Whether he’s creating paintings, drawings, texts, objects, photographs or videos, Kunath deals with themes of love, loss, loneliness, and optimism. He also has a few books out, with “You Owe Me a Feeling” being one of my coffee table favorites.
He combines personal life experiences with highbrow art. Turns historical references into ironic installations and tends to lead the viewer into evocative, metaphorical realizations with quite a few laughs. Drawing inspiration from song titles, lyrics, and books – his works simply straddle the line between abstraction and representation.
A creator of worlds and a genius in mixing his mediums. I love Friedrich Kunath’s paintings, but I love them that much more when I see them coupled with his genius titles. A recent favorite being, “Cloudy with a Chance of Tears” which I woke up to via instagram one stormy morning in June.
