![]() Herakut genius… I first ran across the work of the East German art-duo, Herakut, while driving down Washington Blvd in Culver City, CA. They had painted two massive pieces on the side of a building … and I nearly caused an accident while gazing at them. Hera and Akut first started painting together in 2004. Their street-art styles meshed well together and since then, they have created a vast wonderland of work which is chronicled on city walls and in their two books: “The Perfect Merge” (2009) and “After the Laughter” (2011). Herakut’s characters are captivating. They are all types of people, animals and hybrids of the two. Sometimes the people wear elaborate animal headdresses that seem more like an extension than an accessory. The eyes of the creatures are intensely soulful and a bit melancholy. Then there are the words… many of the pieces carry a tagline of sorts – a simple phrase that ties eloquently into the art. The result is a visual pool so deep that you could happily drown in it.
Herakut will be in Los Angeles doing a live painting performance with Lucent Dossier on Feb 17 & 18 at the Palace Theater in LA; and they will be showing their work at an exhibition at LeBasse Projects – Chinatown, which opens on February 25th. Thoughts | ||
