The boys of White Arrows were my first interview at FYF, and they really set the bar high for the remainder of our interviews. Each member of the band had something interesting to say, and they all seemed to really vibe well together, collectively. White Arrows has referred to their music as a mixture of psychedelic, electronic, and pop music. Psychedelic music isn’t normally my cup of tea, but White Arrows enjoyably fuses psychedelic influences with pop and electronic stylings like I’ve never heard before. Each of their songs on their album, Dry Land Is Not A Myth, will get stuck in your head and have you jamming in your seat. Enjoy.
Spencer Moya: So this is White Arrows! What is your biggest inspiration and this could be within the music realm or outside of the music realm – just what inspires you guys on a day to day basis?
WHITE ARROWS: Daniel Day Lewis – amazing… he’s so amazing. In Gangs of New York and There Will be Blood. Amazing. I personally like his life outside of acting – where he’s a cobbler in Ireland, he just makes shoes. I think he’s going to make a better Lincoln that Abraham Lincoln in his new biography that he’s doing.
S: Cool, cool.
WHITE ARROWS: Do you know that he’s going to be Abe Lincoln in the new [biography]?
S: I haven’t heard that yet, that’s really interesting.
WHITE ARROWS: We want to help out struggling artists we like. We’re big fans so if we can help one out a little bit, everybody check him out!
S: Cool, awesome. So as a bad collectively or even individually, what is your most prized musical possession?
- Mines my amp, for sure, it’s just a ’72 Deluxe Reverb. It’s old, it’s unique and it sounds really good.
– Mine would be my drums, it’s like my first drum set that I ever got myself. It’s like not really technically the best but it’s awesome, it’s like really rare. It’s not expensive or anything.
– Mine’s actually more of an idea. I want to get Kevin Spacey and Kevin Bacon together to do a live DJ set called Space Bacon. And yeah, I think that would be great.
– Mine’s probably my trumpet or my guitar.
– I guess my keen sense of aural and aesthetic taste. By aural I mean a-u-r-a-l, not oral…
S: So, what is your favorite memory since the inception of White Arrows?
WHITE ARROWS: We have so many, we just got back from Australia and it’s one of the best places I’ve ever been. Who knows if I’d able to go there had I not been playing music in a band and touring. You know, everywhere we’ve gone. We went to the Netherlands, we went to Germany. You know, even Fantasy Springs Casino I probably would’ve never played or seen in Indio California. So, there’s amazing places out there. That’s all I’m trying to say.
S: Cool , that’s awesome. So I saw this really crazy picture on your Facebook page recently from Night Swim. Have you guys ever seen her [perform]? She breaks cinder blocks with those things at Beacher’s Madhouse. Breaks cinder blocks and karate chops pieces of wood.
WHITE ARROWS: They are literally the size of my legs.
S: Yeah, it’s insane. So clearly you guys like to go out. What’s your favorite place to go out and kick it in Los Angeles?
WHITE ARROWS: Actually we don’t really like to go out that much. It was kind of a fluke. We’d rather be at the beach. I’d rather be home. It’s like when you’re out all the time on tour, you come back and hibernate pretty much. [Mickey] and I live together with the dog so we just chill there, hang out, play music, but if we do go out, um, I’m trying to think. I like Cha Cha… just some dive bars around town. It’s more about the people when you get down to it. It’s like, if you’re going to run into any interesting people, that’s more important than where it is or what the place is about.
S: Awesome, okay guys thank you so much.
WHITE ARROWS: Thanks.
