I couldn’t think of a better way to wrap up You, Me and Charlie’s FYF experience than with some excellent tunes from The Soft Pack. Hailing from my home base in LA, I can definitely hear a little SoCal influence in their rock and roll kind of music. It’s got these fun pop influences, but there are absolutely some out of the box elements throughout the album as well. It makes for a great sound! And the guys themselves? Really cool, and very interesting kinds of characters! You’ll see what I mean when you read our interview below. And if you like what you hear (and I KNOW you will), make sure to check out their newest record, Strapped, out on Mexican Summer Records!
Spencer Moya: Right now I have The Soft Pack with me. Do you want to go ahead and say your names?
THE SOFT PACK:
- I’m Matty McLoughlin, I play guitar.
- Brian Hill, I play drums.
- I’m David Lantzman, I play bass.
*Singer, Matt Lamkin joins mid-interview
S: So, if you guys could tour with anyone in the world, past or present, who would you tour with? What would be your dream line up?
THE SOFT PACK:
- It’d be cool to be on one of those Stones tours in the 70s – the crazy ones where politicians’ wives were going to the shows and hanging out with the bands. The really kind of dirty but high society parties – crazy decadent awesome wild sh*t. I would be a roadie for something like that. The coke dealer for that tour! (laughing)
- I’d be the coke dealer for the last Nirvana tour. There was a tour, Nirvana and the Butthole Surfers. I would’ve loved to be on that one.
- I’d like to tour with The Modern Lovers or Jonathan Richman, I like Jonathan Richman a lot. I know he’s a fan of the Caribbean. He likes health food. I think he would be a pretty good vibe.
S: So as far as inspiration goes…What are you guys inspired by when you are writing? It could be other musicians, films you’re watching, art you guys are looking at. What, in general, or who inspires you when you guys are in the writing process?
THE SOFT PACK:
- I guess, first off, other bands. Listening to different kinds of music. I’ll just listen to a bunch of stuff and then eventually that will start coming out kind of naturally when I’m playing. But yeah, I’d say for me, other music.
- There’s a song on the new record inspired by a sculptor. [Matt Lamkin, the singer enters] He can tell you about it – This is Matt…
