I’m so happy to be bringing Jon Duenas to YM&C! We have loved his work here for ages. I am particularly fond of his double-exposure portraiture, which was actually the first double-exposure photography I was ever…exposed to! It’s such a beautiful, ethereal genre. Jon was kind enough to answer some questions for YM&C. Not only is he a talented artist, but he’s also a wonderfully inspiring character. Here we go…
Jessica: Introduce yourself in 5 words.
JON DUENAS: Introverted, minimalist, wanderlust, idealist, mustache.
J: Show us a self portrait… (any materials acceptable).
JON: Does it have to be one I took myself? Or can it be a photo someone else took? I haven’t taken a real self portrait in years. But I like this shot my friend Natalye took of me recently:
J: Who/what are you inspired by at the moment?
JON: The Northwest. Forests everywhere, mountains, rivers, oceans, deserts – Honestly, taking friends or models out to these types of locations for photos is just an excuse to go and experience all that nature.
J: Tell us about your earliest memory involving art.
JON: I remember as a kid doing a lot of drawing with colored pencils. I liked doing comic book stuff. But I was only ever decent at drawing from sight. I briefly attempted to draw something straight from my imagination, and it was just terrible. Maybe that’s why I’m a photographer.
J: Favorite art piece you own (take a picture of it).
JON: I don’t own very many art pieces. Mostly photo books and such. But if this isn’t a beautiful piece of art and design, I don’t know what is: My Polaroid SX-70, original model
J: We just gave you a time machine. Where will you go first?
JON: Well, first, to kill Hitler, of course. I’m pretty sure that’s a requirement of anyone given a time machine.
But seriously, I think I would choose the 1960s. It was such a huge turning point in American history. Rock and roll, art, fashion, architecture, civil rights, feminism, the space race – I’d love to just go back and experience all that excitement.
J: Your personal mantra is …
JON: As a photographer, my goal isn’t to take beautiful photos. It’s to go out and experience beautiful moments, and to have my camera with me.
