I met Allison Harvard at a party in New York City two summers ago. She is absolutely striking but even more unique. This wide-eyed Texas native is currently a model and fine artist living in Brooklyn, New York. Over the past couple years I’ve followed her work and have been blown away time and time again. The people and creatures she depicts in her art are truly from a world of her own creation, one which I very much enjoy visiting.
I’m so pleased to share this little interview we created for you Charlies!
Claire: Allison! Please introduce yourself!
ALLISON HARVARD: Hi! My name is Allison Harvard and you are a precious angel.
C: If you could have one song play every time you walked in a room, what would it be?
ALLISON: What’s My Age Again? Blink 182
C: Tell us about the subject matter in your art and what type of medias you use.
ALLISON: My artwork is a collection of creatures, characters, and things I find uncomfortable. I am constantly erasing, re working, and destroying things if they don’t feel right in a drawing. I cannot accept something if it isn’t how my brain originally intended it. Women are a source of spectacular Influence, as well. I enjoy using watercolor and oil. I like to treat different parts of the face with a different kind of care. It always depends. Oil paint makes me want to throw myself off of a building but it always looks so pretty. It’s magical.
C: Are there other mediums you’d like to try out?
ALLISON: I love sculpture and paper mâché. I’m currently working on building giant paper mâché creatures!
C: How did you get into modeling? Does fashion influence your illustrations?
ALLISON: I kind of fell into it. I used to take self-portraits because when you have no one else – you use yourself. Someone happened across a few and reached out. I’m lucky. I remember buying a lot of the international vogue magazines when I was really young. I loved how wiry and ethereal the models looked and i loved the shapes their bodies made. Editorials helped me fall in love with detail.
C: Which artists do you admire and who would you love to collaborate with?
ALLISON: Helmut Newton, Gustav Klimt, Hayao Miyazaki. I would love to collaborate with Vivienne Westwood or the wonderfully talented painter, Raudiel Sanud.
C: How do you like living in NYC? Are there any other cities you’d like to try on?
ALLISON: I love how brutal New York is. It’s challenging and it keeps me moving. I would love to try Asia, London, and LA. I am curious about everything.
C: Do you have a favorite fairy tale?
ALLISON: Снегу́рочка, or “the snow maiden”. It’s so beautiful and heartbreaking.
C: I’m assuming you love to play dress-up. What are you going to be for Halloween this year?
ALLISON: It’s between Chun-Li, Jiggly Puff, or Misty.
C: What will you come up with next?
ALLISON: Lots of art work and neat modeling projects that haven’t been released yet. I’m excited.
