THE FIRST KISS

First Kisses. We’ve all had them (hopefully) and we all remember them (again, hopefully). Boy, do I remember mine. I was in the 6th grade. His name was Brad — and a 7th grader, no less! He was the fairly new kid on the block and sooo cute. All the girls were crushing. Yeah, I always went big. Now as cheesy and cliché as this is, Brad and I kissed in a great game of the great ol’ classic — are you sitting down? — SPIN THE BOTTLE. I know, it’s awful. Terrible, awful. But let me redeem myself here. I was 12, I think. School had just started, maybe a month in. I quickly became friends with the older kids — 7th, 8th, even high schoolers. This all led to much more troublesome things, but we’ll save those for later. Right now we’re going to talk about an innocent first kiss. There I was, sitting in a circle, the youngest one there. Shaking on the inside. I’m not sure if my girl friends knew if I hadn’t had a real kiss yet or not; we had never discussed it. Four people went by — boy, girl, boy, girl — and then it was Brad’s turn. The spin, fast at first, gradually slowing down, spinning slower and slower until it eventually landed on ME. Gulp. Without hesitation, Brad flashed a quick smile, leaned over, and planted one on me. It was awesome. It was amazing. And not just for that period in my life. 15 years later, I can honestly say it is on the list of best kisses I’ve ever had. But I acted like it was no big deal. Always one to play it cool. And if you’re looking for the fairy tale in all of this: Brad asked me to be his girlfriend 2 days later.
