Earthship BiotectureBy Ashley Arabian Posted in Did You Know![]()
I don’t exactly know where the heart of the revolution is happening, but I think we all know it is happening. Occupy the streets! Eat organic! But what are we really looking for? We are all afraid that somebody is going to stop us in the pursuit of happiness: our most basic right. The issue with happiness is that we all have a different version of it, and difference presents conflict. And if we all can’t agree upon one thing, someone much more powerful will decide for us. This is where my admiration for Michael Reynolds comes in. Reynolds started Earthship Biotecture in the 70’s to pursue his own idea of what a home should be. This company, through years of trials and tribulations, builds sustainable, solar homes. Not only do they run off the rain and sun, but they are made from recycled materials such as used tires, bottles, cans and adobe. Earthship homes do not have utility bills and they are equipped with their own indoor greenhouses. It’s a concept that could change the way we are used to living, which in America, is wasteful and luxurious compared to almost everywhere else in the world. I was lucky enough to be accepted into the internship program with Earthship Biotecture for a month. I found beauty in not only the concept of such a conservative style of living, but in the community of people who live in The Earthship Greater World.
